MLK Day of Service brings 70 volunteers to SKEF

January 18, 2016

Nearly 70 community members celebrated the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday by offering their time and talents to the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation on Monday.

With 15 service projects to choose from, the volunteers – which ranged from individuals to families to business organizations – met for a brief orientation and instructions from Valerie Steele, Volunteer Services Director for SKEF, and other SKEF staff members. Projects included hand-addressing mail envelopes, sorting books in SKEF’s Bazillion Books for Kids program and working in the soil in the Learning Gardens at Leslie Middle School and Washington Elementary School.

2016 Awesome 3000 design selected

January 12, 2016

A McNary High School student has crafted the winning logo for the 2016 Awesome 3000.

This year's top design, out of about 45 entries, was created by senior Fallon Dunham. Representatives of the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation recognized her at an all-staff meeting on Monday, Jan. 11.

Each year the foundation invites young artists in the Salem-Keizer School District to submit a design for the Awesome 3000 fun run held the first Saturday in May.

In addition to seeing her artwork on 5,000 t-shirts and thousands of registration forms, posters and more, Dunham received a check for $100. She also earned a $250 contribution to the McNary High School art department.
